What to wear and what to expect for your engagement shoot
Planning your engagement shoot and wondering what to wear or how it all works?
This guide covers everything you need to know, from outfit tips to what actually happens during your engagement photo session. Whether you’ve booked your shoot or you’re just getting started, here’s how to make the most of it.
As a UK wedding photographer focused on natural, documentary-style photography, I keep things relaxed and simple. No awkward poses. Just the two of you, being yourselves.
Why Book an Engagement Shoot?
Engagement photos are more than just a warm-up for the wedding.
They give you a chance to:
Get comfortable in front of the camera
Capture photos in a location that means something to you
Spend time together, without the pressure of a busy wedding schedule
You’ll walk away with natural, candid images that feel like you and feel far more relaxed on your wedding day because of it.
What to Expect During the Shoot
Here’s how your engagement shoot will usually go:
Session length: Around 60–90 minutes
Time of day: Usually early evening for softer, golden light. Although anytime works!
Location: We can shoot somewhere meaningful to you, or I can suggest scenic local spots, for example forests, parks, coastlines, or even urban backdrops
Style: You don’t need to “perform.” I’ll give gentle direction but focus on capturing moments as they naturally happen
This isn’t a photoshoot where you stand and smile at the camera. We’ll walk, talk, and explore and you’ll forget I’m there half the time.
What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos
If you’re stuck on what to wear for your engagement shoot, keep it simple.
Here are a few outfit tips that work well on camera:
Wear something that feels like you
You should feel confident and comfortable. You’ll be walking, sitting, and moving so wear clothes you can relax in.
Avoid busy patterns or large logos
These can distract from the moment in your photos.
Solid colours and softer tones usually photograph well
Earthy or neutral tones tend to work best outdoors. But above all, wear what suits you.
Coordinate your outfits
You don’t need to match, but aim for outfits that work well together in tone and style. If one of you is in jeans and a tee, the other in a formal dress, it may feel off.
Dress for the location and weather
Bring a jacket or jumper if needed. Layers can add depth to your photos and help you stay warm between shots.
Optional: bring a second outfit
One casual and one slightly dressier look can add variety. But it’s not essential.
Still not sure what to wear? Send me a couple of options. I’m happy to advise.
Common Questions About Engagement Shoots
What if it rains?
If the weather turns, we’ll either reschedule or make the most of it. Rainy photos can be really atmospheric with the right light (and umbrellas).
Can we bring our dog?
Yes! I love dogs and they’re part of the family. Just let me know so we can plan a dog-friendly location.
Can we bring champagne, props or a blanket?
Absolutely, if it feels natural to you. Some couples bring a bottle of fizz, a picnic, or a few items that reflect their personality.
Where can we change outfits?
If we’re outdoors, it might be a quick car change or behind a tree. Keep it easy and practical.
We’re not great in front of the camera. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Most of my couples say the same. I’ll help you feel relaxed from the start. The best photos happen when you’re just being yourselves.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to overthink this.
Engagement shoots are about capturing real moments, not creating perfect ones. So wear what feels right, pick a location that suits your vibe, and let me handle the rest.
